Paro-Thimphu-Trongsa-Bumthang-Punakha-Thimphu-Paro

The flight into the Himalayas reveals scenic and breathtaking views of Himalayan Mountains of the world. If weather permits you will be able to see Mt Everest (8,848m, 29,198ft) and other Himalayan mountain ranges.

Sightseeing as well as impromptu opportunities to see an archery competition, taste and even learn to cook the local cuisine at a farm house, meeting and meditating with monks at local monasteries. You may even be lucky enough to see  a fashion show attended by members of the Royal family.

 Day 1 -  Arrive Paro -  drive to Thimphu (about 2 hours) -    home to the Bhutanese Royal Family, the Royal Government, several foreign missions and development projects. Bhutan’s only golf course, a nine-hole circuit, is situated next to the magnificent Tashichoo Dzong.

  • Tashichoo Dzong, (housing the throne room of His Majesty the King)
  • Mini Zoo where you can see  - Bhutan’s national animal - the Takin, a rare member of the goat family. Found in herds in the very high altitudes (13,125ft and over).

Day 2 – drive from Thimphu to Trongsa  (about 7 hours)

Visit

  • Weekend market: Market days are absolutely central to the lives of the Bhutanese, but there are many reasons to visit other than the delicious fresh food on offer every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
 

Day 3  and 4 – Drive from Trongsa to Bumthang (about 3 hours)  - This fascinating valley is the religious heartland of the nation and home to some of the oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries. Its gentle sloping hills offer plenty of walking opportunities to the many temples that dot this valley. The valley is also famous for its production of honey, cheese, apples and the yathra- a woolen material that has multiple uses.

Day 5 and 6  – drive from  Bumthang to Punakha.  (about 8 hours)   Punakha served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955. It is the winter seat of the Je Khenpo(Chief Abbot) and the monk body. It has a temperate climate and its rich fertile valley is fed by Pho(male) Chu and Mo(female) Chu (river).

  • Wangdue –( a unique town to look around with small huts by the side of the road)

  • Punakha Dzong

Day 7 drive from  Punakha to Thimphu. ( about 3 hrs )

  • Memorial Chorten
  • Folk Heritage Museum
  • Handicraft Emporium: The shop  is one of the best places to buy souvenirs from Bhutan, including finely made traditional clothes,  jewellery,  linen work, books, and paintings.
  • Evening Meal with music and dancing in ‘down town Thimphu’
 

Day 8 and 9  – Drive from  Thimphu to Paro (about 2 hrs )  This beautiful valley is home to many of Bhutan’s oldest monasteries and temples. The country’s only airport is in Paro. The valley is also home to Mount Chomolhari (7,300m) situated at the northern end of the valley whose glacier water forms the Pachu flowing through the valley.

  • Rinpung Dzong (This “fortress of heap of jewels” is the venue of annual Paro Tshechu (festival) held every spring.
  • Drugyel Dzong(This ruined dzong is of historical importance. It was built in 1649 by Zhabdrung to commemorate the victory of the Drukpas over the Tibetan invasion in 1644.)
  • Taktshang Monastery(Generally regarded as Bhutan’s most recognizable cultural icon, the Taktshang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest, is strikingly iconic of the country’s culture and traditions.)

Day 10 – flight  from Paro to onward destination

If you wish to extend your stay to include India we can organize for you to drive to Phuentsholing where an Indian car and guide will take you to Sikkim or Darjeeling.
