Glenburn Tea Estate, near Darjeeling – two rivers and a valley, two leaves and a bud, acre upon acre of rolling tea bush and forest, a house on a hill, a Himalayan sunrise. Also stay on the banks of the two meandering rivers, Rungeet and Rung Dung, for fishing, white water rafting or just relaxing. Explore the forest across the river Rungeet, a bird watcher’s paradise. Hike to a village of the old royal kingdom of Sikkim which is accessed via a hanging bridge across the river. Visit the neighbouring villages and soak in the mood, the people. For the energetic a 30km trek to Darjeeling is rewarding – you can of course do all or some of this – and other treks - in a four wheel drive vehicle.

Wild Flower Hall – Mashobra, near Shimla – a luxury resort 1,000ft above Shimla in a dense oak and pine jungle, it gives magnificent views of the valleys and mountain peaks. A ride in the toy train from Kalka to Shimla (or by road) takes you to the resort 3km away from Shimla. There are many walks around the surrounding hills and forests or trek around Shimla – The Glen 4km west of Scandal Point, Summer Hill 5km away, Sankat Mochan 7km away has a Hanuman temple and fine views of Shimla, Tara Devi temple 10km from Shimla.
