Kolkata – Glenburn- Kaziranga -Cruise – Kolkata

BEST SEASON – September to April
In the hot summer months Darjeeling was the saviour for colonial English in Kolkata as Shimla  was to those living in Delhi. Surrounded by tea estates and in sight of Mount Kanchenjunga (the third highest mountain in the world) Darjeeling is the perfect place for walks and relaxation and within reach of the Kaziranga National Park – home of the great Indian One Horned Rhino. This is one of the finest National Parks – not only has it got over 75% of the world population of this rhino but also has elephants, leopards, tigers, sambar, hog deer, and barking deer plus over 400 varieties of birds. You can travel up to Darjeeling on the toy train with fantastic view of the mountains. Stay at the Glenburn Tea Estate to relax. Spend a night at the cottage by the river for fishing or go across the wooden bridge into Sikkim for a trip to the monasteries amongst the hills and rhododendron forests.
 
Suggested itinerary:

Day 1 and 2 – Arrive Kolkata stay two nights  at the Oberoi Grand. A guided tour of this old capital of British India and home to the old East India Company.  On the mouth of the river Ganges this City still has its fine colonial building to remind you of the Raj.

Day 3, 4, 5 and 6 – fly to Bagdogra , then drive (about 4 hours) and stay at  the Glenburn tea estate (including a visit to Sikkim), on the hills surrounding Darjeeling. A tour of the tea estate and tasting of one of the finest pure Darjeeling Teas from the estate - trekking and walking amongst the beautiful countryside in sight of Kanchenjunga. Spend at least one night in the cottage by the river, fish for Mahaseer and trout, or enjoy a  BBQ on the banks. Take a day trip to Darjeeling .  A night in Sikkim, visit Monasteries.  Walk in forests of Rhododendron, stroll through hundreds of varieties of orchids.  

Day 7 and 8 – Fly from Bagdogra to Guwahati . Drive (about 5 hours) to  Kaziranga National Park, - home of the Great One Horned Indian Rhino. Try out an elephant safari to view the Rhino and the other wild animals of the park. There are also over 400 species of birds.  Stay at the Bon Habi resort or similar.

Day 9  -  1 day or more  cruise on the River Brahmaputra. The river starts in Tibet behind the Himalayas and has travelled thousands of miles to reach the plains. A wonderful place to relax and see the world drift by. Visit the island in the middle of the river.

Day 10 – Fly from Guwahati  to Kolkata. Stay one night at the Oberoi Grand.

Day 11 – Flight to onward destination.

OPTIONAL – visit Sunderbans National Park  - largest habitat of the Bengal Tiger. (Permits are required to visit this park – we can organise these for you)
