SKIING

Although India is not known for its Skiing, recent years have seen several new skiing resorts . These are concentrated exclusively in the North of India alongside the Himalayas.

India's most well known ski resort is at Auli in Uttarakhand. Here the season lasts from the beginning of January through until the end of March. It is the best equipped resort in the country boasts a 500m long ski lift which is the largest in Asia amongst its facilities.

The views from Auli are superb as you out over several large mountain peaks such as Kamet and Nanda Devi. During the season the snow is usually very thick, often as much as 3metres. In most years the national skiing championships are held here in February and March giving you the opportunity to see the country's finest in action.

Skiing is also offered in Shimla and Kashmir (Gulmarg and Srinagar). Shimla does not have many facilities yet - but an ice festival is held at Kufri in February.

In Kashmir Srinagar offers heli skiing where you will be taken to the slopes and back on a helicopter.
