Sikkim  - Monasteries and  Dzongi Trek
Fully Escorted Tour – 17 Days / 16 Nights

Kolkata – Bagdogra – Darjeeling  – Yuksom – Dzongi – Thangsing – Tshoka – Yuksom – Tashiding – Pemayangtse – Gangtok – Bagdogra – Kolkata

MODERATE TREK – not strenuous

Trekking in Sikkim is restricted to the Yuksom-Dzongi region in south-western Sikkim. The Yuksom-Dzongi-Goecha La Trek takes in superb views of Kanchendzonga. The trek can be extended by a further 3 days excursion through the Onglathang Valley - an area of outstanding natural beauty.
 

Day 1 and 2  - Arrive  Bagdogra , drive to  Darjeeling. (about 4 hours). Stay at Mayfair hotel or similar.

Sightseeing – including excursion to Tiger Hill,  Ghoom Monastery, tea estate  and ride in toy train. On a clear day one can see the magnificent panoramic view of Mt. Kanchendzonga with the sun rise in the opposite direction.


Day 3 – Drive to Yuksom  (about 7 hours) . Overnight camp or trekker’s hut.

Day 4 - The 1st day of Trek, Yuksom to Bakhim6 hours walking.  We walk uphill following the Rathang River gorge, through dense mixed jungle with magnolias, rhododendrons, ferns and many different varieties of orchids, brightly coloured birds and occasional monkeys. The 1st day of  Trek ends at Bakhim forest bungalow  - 2700 m.

Day 5 - Trek from Bakhim to Tshoka - 3000 m. This trek will be a very short trek and we halt in this place for acclimatization. Overnight camp.

Day 6 - Trek Tshoka to Dzongi – 6 hours walking. We walk uphill passing through the last villages of Tshoka. Tshoka is a village for Tibetan Refugees, built specially for them in the year 1965. We pass through Tshoka and walk further uphill to Phithang, the lunch stop. After lunch we climb further to Deorali from where the Kanchendzonga Massif starts looming in. A short walk brings us to Dzongi Rest House which we can use or camp outside, or alternatively walk another 15 minutes to another delightful campsite -  4030 m.

Day 7 - Trek from Dzongi to Thangsing -  5 to 6 hours walking including lunch at the river bank. During the walk, one can see the beautiful view of the Mt. Kanchendzonga range - 3800 m. Overnight camp.


Day 8 - Trek from Thangsing to Laxmipokhori and back – 6 hours walking.  During the walk we will be passing through the beautiful bushes of Anthopougan -  3800 m. Overnight camp.

Day 9Trek Thangsing to Samiti Lake -  two and a half hours walking. A very gentle leisurely stroll up to Prek Chu Valley amidst spectacular scenery. Majestic Pandim towers above us on our right and huge rock walls flank  the other side of the river. We pass ruined shrines, many walls inscribed with Tibetan prayers and Yak herder’s hut, used only in summer. Crossing a small rise the beautiful sacred turquoise Samiti Lake appears below us and we make camp on its shore by a new cook hut. A spectacular and serene spot for us to rest. Overnight camp.

Day 10 - Samiti lake to Goechela, and back to Thangsing – 5 hours walking.  An early start today, when we set off at first light climbing the hill behind the lake before we descend to the candy bed of a newly drained lake. The whole area above Samiti Lake is called  Jamathang Plateau. We cross this under the shadow of Pandim and ascend to a height of about 500 m. Here we rest above a frozen lake, which is dotted with snow and ice pinnacles.

OPTION - The Goechela Pass is further one and half hours away across the lake, up a steep slope and then on a well-trodden path to our objective, which is festooned with brightly coloured prayer flags. Stupendous views of the east flank of the Kanchendzonga and mountains and valleys into the distance. Those who do not wish to attempt the pass can turn back at 4500 m and return to Thangsing for lunch - two and a  half hours return - 4940 m. Overnight camp.

 

Day 11 - Trek downhill from Thangsing to Tshoka  -  6 to 7 hours walking - through a dense forest of Rhododendron and Silver fur. Tshoka is a small beautiful Tibetan village with about 10 to 15 houses -  2550 m. Overnight camp.

Day 12Downhill trek from Tshoka to Yuksom - 5 to 6 hrs walking  Overnight at trekker’s hut or tents.

Day 13Trek from Yuksom to Tashiding – 5 hours walking. Overnight basic hotel.

 

Day 14 - Morning walk to Tashiding Monastery -  about one  hour. This monastery is believed to be the most sacred monastery in Sikkim. The Great Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Lamaism, is said to have stayed there for sometime of his meditation. Every year in the month of March / April, a festival is held at the monastery, when a jar of holy water called ‘Bhumchhu’,  supposed to have been left by Guru Padmasambhava, is opened and measured. The water is distributed to pilgrims to drink.

Drive from Tashiding to Pemayangtse – about  3 hours. Pemayangtse is the second oldest monastery of Sikkim which belongs to the Ningmapa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism -2150 m.  Over night at basic hotel.

 

Day 15 – Drive  to Gangtok -  about 6 hours. This day we will drive through Ravangla. In Ravangla one can visit the only Bon - Pa Monastery in Sikkim. Stay at Nor-Khill hotel

Day 16 - Morning excursion to Rumtek Monastery.  Tour of  Gangtok including visiting The Enchey Monastery, the Local Handicraft Centre, The Institute of Tibetology and the Flower Show.  Stay at Nor-Khill hotel.

Day 17 – Drive  to Bagdogra – about five hours, for flight to onward destination.

NOTE – a permit is required to visit Sikkim. We can arrange this for you.

OPTION -  Extend your stay in Darjeeling or Kolkata. Spend a few days at Glenburn Tea Estate. Visit Kaziranga National Park or other parts of India.
