Ladakh - Stok Kangri Trek

Known as “Little Tibet” and the “Land of the Lamas”, Ladakh is a seat of Buddhist culture of the middle ages. Ladakh, with its incomparable natural landscape has its head quarters at Leh "the capital of Ladakh".  Its monasteries are a treasure house of Buddhist art with richly decorated thankas, scrolls and wall paintings, gold & copper statues and icons. Ladakh is an eternal invitation to the tourists.

Day 1- Arrive Delhi. Stay at the Imperial hotel. Sightseeing of Old and New Delhi. OPTION – extend your stay in Delhi.

Day 2- Fly to Leh. Stay at Hotel Dragon or similar.
 The hour-long flight is simply spectacular and provides a close-up view of the 7000 m  high massifs of Nun and Kun. Day for acclimatization. Explore  Leh’s colorful bazaar and check out the roadside stalls selling Tibetan artifacts.

Day 3 and 4 -  In Leh.  Sightseeing of Shey, Thiksey & Hemis monasteries

Shey -  the Shey Palace, also known as Khar Chung was built by Senge Namgyal in the beginning of the 17th century. It was erected on the ruins of an already existing castle. Shey monastery belongs to red hat order. 
 

Thiksey -  the great monastery of Thiksey towers on steep rocks at the periphery of an oasis on the right bank of the Indus. This monastery belongs to Gelugpa order (yellow sect).

Hemis monastery -  once the Largest and wealthiest in  Ladakh, is set off the main road hidden in a side valley and is filled with statues, gem-studded chortens and rare books brought from many places including Tibet.

Walk in and around Leh, visiting Leh Palace, Tsemo Gompa, Shankar and Shanti Stupa.  
 

Day 5 -  Leh – Spituk – Zinchan (3380 m) - 4 hrs walk

First drive to Spituk village. Visit Spituk Monastery before  starting first day of the trek.

Spituk - the origins of which date back to the 11th century  AD, was built in its present form in the 15th century. Walk  through the open valley all the way to Zinchen, crossing Zinchen river couple of times over concrete bridges. Overnight in camp.

Day 6 -  Zinchen – Rumbek (3870 m) – 4 hrs walk
Climb gradually to Rumbek going through Zinchen village, en-route involving couple of stream crossings in the gorge below Rumbek village. Overnight in Camp.

 

Day 7 -  Rumbek – Kichupulu (4550 m) - 6 hrs walk
Today we cross Stok la (4750 m). At first we trek on a beautiful gentle sloping trail, but then the path becomes steeper as it zigzags up to the top of the pass. From here there is a steep descent down to the camp at Kichapulu. Overnight in Camp.

 


Day 8-  Kichapulu – Manikarmo (4400 m) – 4 hrs walk
A very steep track descends down to the junction with the river, coming down from Stok Kangri. We follow the river, crossing a few side streams until we reach a shepherd settlement at Manikarmo. Overnight in Camp.

Day 9 -  Manikarmo – Base of Stok Kangri (4900 m) – 3 hrs walk
We climb gradually, then the path becomes steeper as it zigzags up to the base camp. Today we will first establish our base camp. Overnight in Camp.

 

Day 10 and 11 -  Attempt to climb peak Stok Kangri (6153 m)

These are the days devoted to our ascent of Stok Kangri. The energetic can climb some ridges for acclimatization and views. The summit on day 11 will be a long and hard one, and takes around 12 hrs to and fro. After a very early start in the dark, we cross a glacier to the foot of the climb. Although not technical, the route to the summit may involve the use of the ice axe and crampons. For our security and  confidence we will also carry a rope. The summit route is fairly steep and along an exposed ridge for some of the time, with some scrambling on loose rock. The final hundred meters need special care, while crossing the ice slope just below the summit. From the summit the views are amazing. We spend a short while on the summit before descending to the base camp. Overnight in Camp.
 

Day 12 -  Base of Stok Kangri – Stok Village – Leh.

An easy walk down the valley to Stok village, visit Stok Palace and drive to Leh. Overnight at hotel Dragon or similar.
 
Day 13 -  In Leh.  A day at leisure.  

Day 14 - Fly to  Delhi. Stay at the Imperial.  Sightseeing or day at leisure. OPTION – extend your stay in Delhi

Day 15 - Flight to onward destination.
