Ladakh - Markha Valley Trek

With its incomparable natural landscape, Ladakh is an eternal invitation to the tourists. Known as “Little Tibet” and the “Land of the Lamas”, Ladakh has its head quarters at Leh – the start of many treks. Its monasteries are a treasure house of Buddhist art with richly decorated thankas, scrolls and wall paintings, gold and copper statues and icons. Here we explore the Markha Valley Trek – starting at Stok La and finishing at Hemis.

Day 1 - Arrive Delhi. Stay at The Imperial. Sightseeing – old and New Delhi. OPTION – extend your stay in Delhi

Day 2 –Fly to Leh. Stay at Hotel Dragon or similar. The hour-long flight is simply spectacular and provides a close-up view of the 7000 m high massifs of Nun and Kun. Day  for acclimatization. Explore Leh’s colorful bazaar and check out the roadside stalls selling Tibetan artifacts.

 

Day 3 and 4 -  In Leh. Sightseeing of Thiksey, Shey,  Shankar, Phyang and Spituk  monasteries.

Thiksey -  the great monastery of Thiksey towers on steep rocks at the periphery of an oasis on the right bank of the Indus. This monastery belongs to Gelugpa order (yellow sect).

Shey - shey palace, also known as Khar Chung, was built by Senge Namgyal in the beginning of the 17th century. It was erected on the ruins of an already existing castle. Shey monastery belongs to red hat order.

Shankar - this monastery belongs to Gelugpa order (yellow sect) and was founded by the last Skushog Bakula as a branch monastery of Spituk during the turn of the century.

 

Phyang -  lies away from Indus to the far right at the ridge between Nimu & Leh. Phyang belongs to red hat order and was founded in the 16th century by Kungda Grangs-pa.

Spituk -  the origins of which date back to the 11th century AD, was built in its present form in the 15th century

Day 5 - Drive to  Stok Village and trek to base of Stok La - 3 hrs walk

Drive to Stok Village, visit Stok Palace: This palace was built in the beginning of the 19th century. It is the residence of queen of Ladakh - the widow of last king who died in 1974. The museum treasures numerous priceless articles of ancient times. We start our first day of trek following the main trail to the outskirts of the village and then follow on the left bank of the river which comes from the massif of Stok Kangri- 6150 m. Climb gently, then leave a small pass on the left and go up a small valley where we camp. Overnight in camp.

 
Day 6 - Base of Stok La - Rumbek - 7 hrs walk

A long and  steep ascent to the Stok La - 4800 m, with breath taking views of the Indus valley. From here a sharp descent of 2 hrs will take us to the outskirts of Rumbek village. Overnight in camp.

 


Day 7-  Rumbek - Shingo - 7 hrs walk

From here the trail ascends to Yurutse village. Good path along the mountainside, then across a small valley and zigzag steeply up to a flat area then go along the mountain side to Ganda La - 4950 m. After an easy descent of 2 hrs we arrive at Shingo. Overnight in camp.

Day 8 - Shingo - Pensay - 5 hrs walk

A long descent through a wooden ravine to Skiu village where the trail meets the Markha Valley. Here we turn left to the Markha River and after another 2 hrs easy walk we arrive  at our camp. Overnight in camp.

 

Day 9 - Pensay - Markha - 7 hrs walk

After two hours the trail crosses the river by a newly built bridge, and then re-crosses up stream at Chalak. Beyond this settlement there is an impressive line of Chortans and a huge mound of goat horns, probably to ward off any evil spirits trying to enter the valley. From here we cross the Markha River two times, and then short climb towards Markha. Overnight in camp.

Day 10 -  Markha - Thaungtse - 7 hrs walk

Go up to the main valley on the right bank, then main trail follows the valley through Umlung and Hankar village and the site of more impressive fort ruins. The valley narrows and goes higher. Cross onto the left bank over a wooden bridge to reach the pastures of Thaungtse. Overnight in camp

 
Day 11 -  Thaungtse - Nimaling - 3 hrs walk

The trail climbs quite steeply to the Nimaling plateau, offering impressive views of Kang Yaste - 6400 m. Nimaling - 4700 m, is one of the most beautiful high valleys in ladakh. Overnight in camp.

 

Day 12 -  Nimaling - Sumda - 8 hrs walk

Steep climb along the mountain side, then some zig zagging up to the Kangmaru La 5200 m. Superb views across the Stok ranges and down to the Indus valley. Then descent down through the gorges to the first village Chakdo. From here easy walk takes us to Sumda. Overnight in camp.

Day 13 - Sumda - Hemis – Leh

Descend the valley, until the trail meets the jeep track at Martselang. Here we meet our pre-arranged transport and drive to Hemis. After a visit to Hemis Monastery, we return to Leh for a welcome hot shower and a well-deserved celebration. Overnight at Dragon hotel or similar.
 
Day 14 – Fly to  Delhi. Stay at The Imperial.  Sightseeing of Old and New Delhi.  OPTION – extend your stay in Delhi

Day 15 -  Flight to onward destination.

OPTION – Extend your stay in Delhi. Visit the Taj Mahal, pink city of Jaipur or any other part of India.
