Here we explore South India from the Western Ghats (Kochi) to Mysore and journey through Karnataka’s glorious past to Goa aboard the luxury train The Golden Chariot.
 
Cochin (Kochi)
 
Day 1 and 2 - Arrive Kochi stay 2 nights at Brunton Boatyard. Visit the Jewish Synagogue, St Francis Church. Stroll along the harbour and see the Chinese Fishing Nets in operation. Evening Kathakali dance performance.

Cochin / Kumarakom
 
Day 3 and 4 – Drive to Kumarakom (about 2.5 hours) for a two night stay at Coconut Lagoon. Transfer by half hour boat ride to hotel. Cruise into the backwaters or at leisure among the mangrove forests, paddy fields and coconut groves interspersed with enchanting waterways.
 
Day 5 and 6 – Drive to Munnar (about 4 hours) stay two nights at Windermere Estate. A haven of peace and tranquillity, Munnar stands at the confluence of three mountain streams. Ideal for trekking, boating, riding, angling. Morning sightseeing of Munnar and surrounds. See exotic species of flora and fauna. Visit the spice plantations, coffee and tea estates.
 
 
 

 

Munnar / Calicut (Kozhikode)
 
Day 7 – Drive to Calicut (Kozhikode) (about 7 hours) – stay one night at Taj Residency. Afternoon city tour. Visit the beach for spectacular sunset views.
 
Optional Extension – stay one or two nights at a Tree House – two to three hour drive

Calicut (Kozhikode) / Kabini (in State of Karnataka)
 
Day 8 – Drive to Kabini (about 6 hours) stay one night at Orange County. Kabini river snakes through Nagarhole National Park forming an aqueous boundary with Bandipur National park, forming the largest contiguous forest cover in this part of the world and home to the largest concentration of herbivores in Asia, the largest being the Asiatic Elephant ruling the roost here. Enjoy a ‘Coracle ride’ – a round boat unique to South India and Ireland.
 

Kabini / Mysore
 
Day 9 and 10 - Morning drive into the jungle to spot Tigers, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Elephants. Drive to Mysore (about 1.5 hours) for a two night stay at Metropole Hotel. Visit the Maharajah’s Palace, 2000 year old temple of Chamundeswari, summer palace of Tipu Sultan, Brindavan Gardens, fruit and vegetable markets.

Day 11 – Drive to Hassan (about 3 hours) – en route visit Shravanabelagola, a popular Jain pilgrimage centre known for its monolithic statue of Gomateswara on a hilltop. Board the Golden Chariot Train (private cabin) and embark on a voyage of discovery through Karnataka. Drive to Belur to experience the magnificent Hoysala Temple Complex, then a quick hop to Halebid for a tour of the richly carved temples. Dinner on board.
 
Day 12 – Hospet and Hampi – early ride to Hospet, morning explore Hampi walking among the ruins of palaces and temple complexes of the Sacred Centre. After lunch on board visit the Royal Centre and the Vittala Temple Complex with its famous Stone Chariot Shrine. Stroll through the craft bazaar. Dinner on board.
 
Day 13 – Hampi, Badami, Goa – ride to Badami. After breakfast morning tour of Badami and Pattadakal. Badami is famous for its cave complex and rust red sandstone cliffs. Pattadakal, with its beautifully chiselled temples is a World Heritage Site located on the banks of the Malaprabha River. Scenic drive back to train and onward to Goa. Dinner on train. Arrive Goa post midnight.

 
Goa

Day 14 – Goa – after breakfast visit Old Goa, Solar de Colasco (old Portuguese House) and churches. Lunch at Sahakari Spice Plantation, Ponda. Tour the spice farm. Sunset view on Utorda Beach. Back on board and dinner.
 
Day 15 – Goa / Bangalore – after breakfast arrive into Bangalore. Tour of the Garden City.
