Garhwal - Nanda Devi Sanctuary Trek

MODERATE TREK – not strenuous.

 

The Magnificent group of peaks around Nanda Devi was, for many years before the second world war,  the focus of attention for the climbing world.

The view from inside the Nanda Devi sanctuary is one of the most outstanding mountain panoramas in the world, a natural fortress surrounded by about seventy snow-capped peaks.

The inner sanctuary is currently closed but it is still possible to trek to the outer sanctuary, a great bowl in the hills on the West Side of the Nanda Devi group. The trek is not a difficult one, with superb views  along many  unknown trails and fine display of flowers.

Day 1 and 2 -   Arrive Delhi. Stay at the Imperial. Sightseeing – old and New Delhi, including Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Qutab Minar. (see Delhi sightseeing)

 

Day 3  -  Drive to  Rishikesh (about 4 hours). Stay at Glass House on the Ganges. Relax on the sandy beach, watch or do White Water Rafting, witness the evening Aarti ceremony at Triveni Ghat.

Day 4 – Drive to Rudra Prayag  (about 4 hours)  An enjoyable drive that takes us through the forested Shivalik foothills to the junction of the Baghrathi & Alaknanda rivers at Deo Prayag where the Ganges properly begins.  Overnight camp.

 

Day 5 -   Rudra Prayag - Debal – Mundoli (about 4 hours drive)
A great day of driving as we continue through the heart of Garhwal country. The prayag's are the sacred confluence's on the rivers that drain in to the Ganges, there are five in all and further into the valley. Shortly before Gwaldam we turn off the main road to Debal – 1218 m . and drive up a switchback track to the road head near Mundoli village - 2134 m.   Overnight camp

 

TREK BEGINS

 

Day 6 -   Mundoli -  Didina  - 2515 m - 6 hours walk
We leave camp and walk to Lohajung Khal - 2350 m,  a grassy ridge with excellent views of the surroundings and our first glimpse of a big peak Nanda Gunti - 6860 m. After lunch a steady ascent brings us to Wan. Here in the base of a massive deodar tree is an ancient shrine devoted to Latu.  Overnight camp.

Day 7 -   Didina - Bedni Bugyal - 3420 m. -  5 hours walk
After a brisk descent, the morning walk involves a long, sometimes steep ascent, along a good stone path through shady forests of oak and chestnuts. Another steady climb takes us through rhododendron forests, which present a beautiful show of white, pink and crimson when in flower. We then move above the tree line through springy turf and rock to reach the high grazing meadow of Bedni Bugyal. It is said to be the one of the most stunning alpine campsites in the Himalayas. Overnight camp.

 

Day 8 -   Bedni Bugyal - Kanol – 2750 m. -  7 hours walk
We retrace our steps down from Bedni Bugyal. After the initial steep descent, we cut across through forests and open ground to a lunch spot in a small meadow some distance above Wan. A gradual ascent brings us to a minor pass, the Kukin - Khal - 3120 m. The afternoon walk brings us to a beautiful meadow above the village of Kanol. Overnight camp.

 

Day 9 -   Kanol - Sutol - 2150 m. - 5 hours  walk
An excellent day of walking through classic Garhwal scenery. Beyond the campsite lies Kanol village, a traditional Garhwali settlement with stone and slate houses and excellent views of Trishul peak. From here a lengthy descend takes us to the Nandakini river. In the afternoon a pleasant walk takes us on a broad cliff path above the river to a pine forest and villages. Near Sutol village we cross Nandakini river on a solid iron bridge and stop for the night on the right bank. Overnight camp.

Day 10 -   Sutol - Ramni - 2775 m. - 6 hours walk
Our morning walk takes us up and out of the valley through delightful villages where many social rituals and annual events are still intimately linked to the worship of the  ‘Mother Goddess’. In the afternoon an easy walk followed by a steep climb takes us to our campsite above Ramni village. From here there are wonderful views. Overnight camp.

Day 11 -   Ramni - Kalyaghat - 2450 m. - 6 hours walk
A less  demanding day due to the restricted choice of campsites. A steady climb through the forest brings us to the top of the ridge known as Ramni pass - 3220 m, with distant views of the Kuari Pass. This is an ancient forest with splendid old specimens of gnarled oak, holly, chestnut and rhododendrons emerging from a thick carpet of white and pink flowering peonies. We camp near Shim Kharak. Overnight camp.

 

Day 12 -  Kalyaghat - Dhakwani - 3250 m - 7 hours walk
We continue through thick forest to the village of Jhenipani, 1524 m from where a steep descent takes us down the wild Birch Ganga, a river. We cross the river over a suspension bridge. Across the bridge is a steep ascent that follows a zig zag path up the bare and eroded hillside. After lunch we walk through forest and  pastures that  takes us to Pana, the last village before the pass. Shortly before the village we cut up to Kalyaghat, a small meadow. Overnight camp.

Day 13 -   Dhakwani - Kuari pass - 3660 m.  Base - 3020 m.  5 hours walk
An early start for the pass in order to enjoy the splendid sun rise on the Great Himalayas. The ascent,  that takes less then two hours, follows a zig zag path to the pass, with most impressive views  from a point further along the Kuari ridge at 4270 m. From here major peaks visible are Kamet - 7070 m,  Badrinath – 7040 m, Dunagiri - 7066 m, Changabang – 6860 m, Nilkanth - 6600 m and Hathi Parbat - 6730 m. After savouring this superb panorama, described by many as the best in the Himalayas, we descend a little from the main ridge to our camp below the pass. Overnight camp.

 

Day 14 -  Base - Tapovan - Joshimath  
Our last day of this magnificent trail, as we follow a long winding trail down hill to the road at Tapovan. Here we join our transport and drive to Joshimath  (about half hour) . Overnight rest house.

 

 

Day 15 -   Drive to Rudra Prayag (about 3 hours)  after a leisurely breakfast. See the  confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers.  Overnight  rest house.

Day 16 -  Drive to Rishikesh (about 5 hours).  Stay at Ananda in the Himalayas, be pampered in the world’s No. 1  spa hotel.

Day 17 -  Drive to Delhi (about 5 hours).  Flight to onward destination.

Option -  Spend a few days at Ananda in the Himalayas.   Extend your stay in Delhi OR visit other parts of India.
