If you just want to concentrate on birding for all or part of your holiday, here’s a sample of the focussed itinerary that our Indian partners have put together

Kolkata or Delhi - Dibrugarh - Namdhapa Tiger Reserve - Dibru-Saikhowa Natioanl park – Dibrugarh – Kolkata or Delhi

BEST SEASON – November to March

Assam and other North Eastern states of India, have the highest area under wet lands throughout the Brahmaputra Valley. Varying from 50 to 5,000m  in altitude and habitation, lush green to the snow capped mountains, from the great Himalayan foothills to the Patkai range, more than 900 species and sub-species of birds exist.
           
Dibrugarh – the Tea Hub in upper Assam is located on the Southern bank of the Great River Brahmaputra. It is the gateway to the ‘Hidden Land’ of Eastern Arunachal and Northern Myanmar. Located in the lush green environment of tea, it is the original home of the beverage.

Day 1 -  Arrive Dibrugarh (Assam) from Kolkata or Delhi  and spend the afternoon birding in tea gardens and the surrounding woodlands. Look out for Streak-throated Woodpecker, Eurasian Golden Oriole, Purple Swamphen, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Common Hoopoe, Indian Roller, Rufous Treepie and Pied Kingfisher.  Go for a tea tour to learn all about tea, its history, and origin. Overnight at Chang Bungalow.

Day 2 - Drive to Namdapha National Park (Arunachal Pradesh) (about 5 hours), packed lunch at Miao. In the afternoon, walk along the river Noa-Dihing looking out for Common Merganser, Ibisbill and the White-bellied Heron. Overnight at a forest lodge or camp at Deban in the heart of the National Park. At night look for the slow Loris.


Namdapha National Park (a tiger reserve) is one of the last remaining of the few large evergreen forests in the world.

It is the only National Park in the world where the four big cats-tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard are found. There are nearly 450 species of birds in Namdapha National Park.  Great Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Rufous-Necked Hornbill, Grey Peacock pheasant, Redheaded Trogon, Beautiful Nuthatch, Snowy-Throated Babbler, Forest Eagle Owl are some of them. Sighting of the Hoolock Gibbon (a rare species) is also a possibility.

Day 3 - Explore Namdapha – trek to Haldibari Camp (5kms). One can see Northern Goshawk, Pied Falconet, Green Imperial Pigeon, Oriental Turtle Dove, Plum-headed Parakeet, White-crested Laughingthrush, Spotted Laughingthrush, Black-Rumped Shama, Himalayan Griffon, Blue-Eared Barbet, Golden-Throated Barbet, Dusky Eagle-Owl, Collard Owlet, Himalayan Wood Owl and Collard Scops Owl. Over night camp at Haldibari.

Day 4 - After breakfast, trek to Hornbill. Chances of spotting - Silver-Eared Mesia, Rufous-Throated Warbler, Black-Breasted Sunbird, Green Magpie, Beautiful Sibia, Long-Tailed Sibia, Chestnut-Breasted Partridge, White-Cheeked Partridge, Barred Cuckoo Dove and Streaked Spiderhunter.  Overnight camp at Hornbill.


Day 5 -  Morning birding towards Embeong and back to Camp by sundown. Look for Beautiful Nuthatch, Ward’s Trogon, Snowy Throated Babblers.  Overnight camp at Hornbill.

Day 6 -  Trek down to Deban. Birding along the way. Overnight camp at Deban Rest House.

Day 7 -  Early morning birding at Namdapha, Moti Jheel road, looking out for Rufous Necked Laughing Thrush, Greater Necklaced Laughing Thrush.  Drive back to Dibrugarh by sundown. Overnight at the Chang Bungalow.

Day 8 - Early morning drive to the Guijan range of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park with packed breakfast and lunch (about 1½ hours). Return late in the afternoon to Dibrugarh . Overnight at the Chang Bungalow.

Dibru-Saikhowa  National Park- a riverine park with vibrant wilderness which provides a safe haven to many rare and endangered species of birds. Take several boat rides and walks around parts of the park’s southern fringe. One can see Oriental Darter, Ruddy Shelduck, Great Cormorants, Spot-Billed Ducks, Great Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Greater Adjutant, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle, Swamp Francolin, Swamp Prinia, Jerdon’s Babbler, Black-Breasted Parrotbill, Pale Capped Pigeon and Marsh Babbler etc.

Day 9 -  After early morning birding, fly out from Mohanbari airport, Dibrugarh (about half an hour) to onward destination.

NOTE Permits are required to visit Arunachal Pradesh. We can arrange these for you.

OPTION – combine your birding experience with  a longer stay and visit Kaziranga National Park, Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling or any other part of India.
