FISHING

Can you outwit and land a fish?

Although there are various methods of fishing, none guaranteeing you will actually land one, we are proposing the well known rod and line method.

The two timeless sporting fish in India have been and still remain to be,  the Trout and the mighty Mahaseer, which incidentally is the best fresh water sporting fish in the world. Each has its own peculiarities, its preferred bait, and preference of waters it inhabits. But each has a thrill and experience of its own.

The Mahaseer (Barbus Tor)

The Mahaseer inhabits the torrential rivers, and perennial rivulets both in the South and the sub mountainous region across the entire Himalayan terrain. One of the prime places is of course the Himalayan countryside, which by the way will also offer you  the grandest of sceneries in the world. Rivers in Assam and the the Cauvery river in the South are the other places, and are equally stunning in the scenery they provide.

The Mahaseer is a migratory fish migrating upstream which  is an omnivourous fish and is noted to be a continuous feeder. Algae, insects and other water plants taken in while feeding on aquatic insects and other fish have been recorded from the stomach of a Mahaseer. They grow to a big size and specimens as big as 50 lbs or 25 kgs have been hooked even in the more recent past.

There are differences in opinion as to how it gets its name. Some think it has originated from  Maha Sher (aka Tiger Fish) from its aggressive behaviour that has been observed, in the waters and when it gets hooked. Of all fish it is the toughest to land and anglers would  die to have such an exhilarating experience in hooking and attempting to land one.
The Trout

Introduced into  India by the British, both the Brown and the Rainbow Trout can be found in the Indian waters. The Himalyan rivers are once again the place to go and incidentally, Kashmir¹ has been one of its and the angler’s favourite haunt traditionally. Although, there are many other beats for the avid angler across the entire mountain range and in other parts of the country as well.

The Trout is a much smaller fish but is also an angler’s delight

Mahaseer
There are 4 main coasts in India where sea fishing can be done, these are Goa, Kerala Coast, Lakshadweep Islands and the Orissa  coast and Andaman Islands. These areas offer an all round big game experience whether you want to fish for Tiger Prawns and Tuna on the Orissa coast or Blue Marlin, Sharks and Barracuda on the Lakshadweep Island

Season
Fishing can be enjoyed the year round in India however the best time is October to November Or  April to June for the Himalayan Regions.
