Deccan Odyssey -  8 Days /7 Nights

The train runs once a week on Wednesdays from Mumbai.

The train has outstanding facilities and boasts a library, gymnasium, steam bath and massage centre amongst its many facilities.

Day 1 – You depart in the late afternoon from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai.

Day 2 – You will wake up early and enjoy breakfast before arriving at Bhoke Railway Station. You will travel by air conditioned bus to Rai Bhatgaon where you will enjoy a cruise on the river passing by the historical fort of Jaigad . Upon re-boarding the bus you will explore some of the fine beaches of the Konkan coast abound with green scenery on one side and sparklingly clear waters the other side. Here you will be free to stroll around the area and enjoy some lunch. The afternoon will see you embark on some sightseeing in the nearby town of Ratnagiri well known for its Alphanso mangoes. Followed by the chance to shop in some of the towns local bazaars. You will board the train again in the early evening for the trip to Sindhunagari.

Day 3 – You will alight at the Ukashi station nestled amidst magical mountains. You will take the short journey to the Rai Jetty where you will board a boat for a trip down some of the scenic backwaters where the banks are lined with exotic birdlife. Carry on to the Sindhurdurg Sea Fort before progressing onto the Tarkarli Beach Resort for a spot of lunch in the sun.
The afternoon will see you enjoy another boat ride on the creeks of Tarkarli arriving at the Walaval jetty in time to pay a visit to the local village market where you can watch the local craftsmen at work. The evening will be accompanied by a traditional meal onboard as you journey onwards to Goa.


Day 4 – You will arrive in Goa, the most popular destination for tourists in India. The land here is surrounded by lush green fields populated with tiny little villages while on the other side is where some of the world’s finest golden beaches reside. The day will be spent exploring the town of Goa, you will start with the old town where you can walk amongst the old ruins and gardens before visiting some of the impressive architecture. These architectural treats include Basillica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral and the Church of St. Francis of Assissi which has been turned into an archaeological museum for local Goan antiques. You will then proceed to Panjam by bus which is the capital of the state of Goa.
Here you will enjoy lunch and several hours free leisure time before you head back to the train for the journey onwards to Pune.


Day 5 – In the morning you will pull into Pune which is the capital of Maratha and considered by many to be the cultural capital of the state.  The first you will see of Pune is the Phule Mandi  which is the old central market named after the social reformer Jotirao Phule.This will be followed by a visit to the historic Raja Kelkar Museum famed for its range of artifacts from the 17th, 18th and 19th century. After lunch at the Hotel Le Meridian there is the opportunity to visit the Tribal museum denoting the history of the tribes of Maharashtra.  Following on you will pay a visit to one of the world’s largest Synagogues built by the Jewish merchant Sir David Sassoon in 1967. The final part of the day will be spent visiting Aga Khan Palace where Mahatma Gandhi and his wife were imprisoned after starting the Quit India movement. The evening will see you enjoy a sound and light show at the Shaniwarwada Palace before dinner and the journey onwards to Aurangabad.


Day 6 – Upon arrival in Aurangabad you will roll back in time to the picturesque ruins of years gone by.  A luxury bus will take you to the impressive fortress of Daulatabad where you can walk amongst the old ruins. The next destination is the world famous Ellora Caves which are now a world heritage site.  The Hindu, Jain and Buddhist caves rank amongst the finest in India. There are a total of 34 caves which were all cut out of volcanic rock. The ancient carvings within are thought to be the work of priests and pilgrims who travelled on the ancient route around 600 to 700AD.

Lunch will follow at the Taj Hotel. In the afternoon you will move onto the Bibi-Ka-Maqbara which is an exact replica of the Taj Mahal, it was a tribute from the emperor’s son to his mother. The rest of the time is spent wandering freely around the area and local markets until it is time to board the train once more for a mouth-watering feast and the journey onwards.


Day 7 – You will alight at Jalgaon railway station in the morning. The first highlight of the day will be Ajanta caves, these are much older than the Ellora caves you visited the previous day. These caves are also cut out of volcanic lava, they were only unearthed in 1819 accidentally by British explorers after they had been lost to the world sometime in the 7th century. The murals and sculptures will take your breath away, The Birth of the Buddha and The Thousand Buddha’s rank highly amongst the finest murals and sculptures ever seen. The paintings on the cave ceilings such as the Charging Bull, Black Princess and the Elephant scattering the Lotus continually leave tourists from all over the world to gaze in amazement at the sheer beauty of the designs and fine artwork. Before returning back to the train for lunch there will be the opportunity for some leisure time to enjoy the sights and shops of the local area before you enjoy lunch on board and the short train ride to Nasik. As you arrive you will be whisked off in a luxury A/C bus to the nearby Sula Winery at Govardhan Park. As you approach the grape vines you will get a breathtaking view of the Gangapur dam site, shortly after this you will be in the heart of the Sula wine region where everywhere you look you will be greeted by the site of row upon row of grapes in every direction as far as the eye can see. The air, thick with the heavy aroma of grapes, should ensure you work an appetite for dinner. After enjoying the sumptuous meal it is time to head back to Nasik and back aboard the Deccan Odyssey for the journey to the most advanced business capital of India, Mumbai.
 
Day 8 – Sadly when you arrive in Mumbai early in the morning the journey will end but not before you enjoy a special farewell breakfast on board.
