Want to go back to a bygone age: a colonial tea planter but without the hard work and all the pleasure? Then this is just for you. Set above 2000 metres, Darjeeling provides a refuge from the heat during summer and it has stunning view of the Himalayas including Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. You can get to it by the toy train which these days is pulled by a small diesel engine. Spend 3 -4 days in Sikkim, then spend a few days at Glenburn Tea Estate and watch the tea picking and processing (in season March to Oct). Don’t miss the Rhinos at Kaziranga National Park.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 and 2 - Arrive Delhi - stay two nights at the Imperial Hotel. Guided tour of the old and the new city. (OR arrive Kolkata)

Day 3 - Fly to Guwahati and drive (about 4 hours) to Kaziranga National Park. Stay one night (or more) at the Bon Habi resort or similar. Park safari to spot the one horned rhino and other wildlife and birds.

Day 4 and 5 - Fly from Guwahati to Bagdora and drive to Darjeeling (about 3 hours) for a stay of two nights at the Mayfair hotel. Ride on the toy train and explore this hill station with spectacular views.

Day 6 and 7- Drive to Gangtok (Sikkim) (about 4 hrs) for a two night stay at Nor Khill hotel, enjoy walks in the hills covered in Orchids and Rhododendrons. Tour of Gangtok.

Day 8, 9 and 10 - Drive to Glenburn Tea Estate (about 3 hours) for a stay of three nights. Guided walks and tour of the plantation. Tea tasting for the best tea in the world. Stay at the Burra Bungalow, also spend a night in a cottage on the estate by the river, fish for Mahaseer or go White Water Rafting.

Day 11 and 12 - Fly from Bagdogra (4 hours drive from Glenburn) to Kolkata for a two night stay at the Oberoi Grand hotel. Guided tour of the old Colonial Capital of India.

Day 13 - Fly home from Kolkata or Delhi

Optional tours to see the tribes of North East India or Orissa can be organised
